Mountain bikes, maybe?

By Anna | 5 Comments »

I’ve been considering adding a mountain bike to my fleet recently. As I’ve been introduced to the more “serious” side of riding, mountain bikers really seem to have the market on fun times. Recently fellow Bici racing team member John K and Emily over at She Rides Bikes posted about their experiences racing the PMBAR 2011, and even though the idea of racing that is particularly mind blowing (50-80 miles, 9,000-15,000 feet of climbing, take 6-12 hours to complete), I still somehow imagine it’d be fun to try! Crazy.

Today Heidi posted a great video over at Grit and Glimmer, and I think that might have pushed me over the edge. While I sit here in my office I imagine being out in the woods, riding forever, getting all dirty, not dealing with traffic…sounds pretty amazing to me.

Maybe I just need a sexy angel to teach me the ways.

There is a women’s cycling group started in Birmingham- I think on Facebook it is listed at Magic City Cycle Chix (MC3). Also, there is an all-levels mountain bike ride on Thursday night at Oak Mountain put on by Cahaba Cycles and there is a beginner ride on Friday nights at 5:30ish, meeting at the south trailhead (last parking lot before going up the hill to Peavine Falls). If you want to borrow a bike for the beginner ride to try it out, you can go to bump.org and message Stacey Davis. She’ll get you the hookup.

You should definitely give mountain biking a try! There’s nothing like it. It combines my two favorite things, bikes and nature. And racing, you should give that a try to. Those 6 – 12 hour races are so much fun, even if you aren’t “serious” about it.
