Cyclocross races begin as a mass start, then quickly devolve into an individual, multi-dimensional struggle to maintain one’s (1) pace, (2) dignity, and (3) motivation while simultaneously maintaining a pretense of sanity. You signed up to do the race, ergo, you cannot be sane, therefore the best you can hope for is to appear to be in your right mind. Of course, it’s also handy if you can remain upright, not upside down on your back in the mud, waving your bike around as you struggle to get out of the pedals. Not that I’d know anything about that.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! I went for a training ride yesterday, and although I was incredibly slow, I did manage to survive and enjoy myself.
